Stupid things rescue people say...

Postby odessa on Sun Apr 11, 2010 1:19 pm

"This eight week old puppy is very shy around new people. We believe it's because he thinks they are going to take him back to the shelter."

*pulls hair out*

Just socialize the damned puppy and get him used to people. Teach him his ABC's while you're at it, since he is apparently actually a small child and not a dog.

I also like, "He chases cats, but not in an aggressive way. He just wants to pin them down so that he can sniff them." Yes...that's exactly what he's thinking.

Sorry, end of rant...what's the dumbest thing you've heard?

I have a huge, huge problem with rescues around here mislabeling dogs to get them adopted. I fostered a chocolate colored american bully for awhile and they insisted, even argued with me face to face, that he was a chocolate lab mix (refused to even mention the words 'pitbull') and listed him on petfinder as such. The dog was obviously a pitbull. Slippery slope, you know. Not to mention, the dog was dog aggressive as hell... :eyeroll: I bet whoever adopted him is still wondering why their outgoing, all around lab cant go to the dogpark.

Its not just that rescue either, its a lot of the smaller ones around here. You can look at pages full of lab/boxer/bulldog mixes around here and half of them are most likely full or close to full pitbulls.. Owning a pitbull isnt like owning most other dogs, and people need to be aware of what they are buying into!!

My most hated dumb statement is also about the most common one I hear:

Dog is nervy.

"Oh, he's been abused/beaten".

(Generally dog is about 10 weeks old!)

Should be more like stupid thing dog owners say. Stupidity knows no bounds.

This past weekend the SAR group and I got a lot of people (rescue and regular owners) saying their dog could do SAR because "s/he sniffs things a lot." Wha?

My dog would be good at SAR because he likes to watch crime dramas on TV.

I had someone I know who walks dogs tell me that she told one of her clients that their dog submissively urinates ever since her older "brother" died because she is terrified they are going to euthanize her next. They can't figure out what else might possibly be the problem. So they have all agreed that this is it and they don't know what to do to get the dog to change her mind, because they feel they are sufficiently dominant with her already.

How do these people find their way out of the bed in the morning?

I told them that next time they were at the vet, maybe they should consider, I don't know...a urinalysis?!? Poor dog.
